Of Substance will consider advertising products, services, issues or events that concern people who work with or have an interest in, alcohol, tobacco and other drug issues.

The acceptance and publication of an advertisement does not constitute endorsement by Of Substance, the Australian National Council on Drugs, the Alcohol and Other Drugs Council of Australia, or the Australian Government.

If any advertiser claims to have this endorsement no further advertisements will be accepted from that advertiser.

No advertisements will be placed alongside magazine content which discusses related issues.

No advertisements will influence or be seen to influence editorial decisions.

There will usually be no more than one and a half pages of advertising per issue.

Exceptions

Of Substance will not accept any advertising for products or services linked to or funded by the tobacco industry.

No advertising will be accepted in relation to alcoholic beverages. In the case of services that may be supported by funding from the alcohol industry then extra scrutiny will be required and the advertisement forwarded to the Chair of the Board for appraisal.

In the case of pharmaceutical advertising:

• products that are approved for use in Australia and have no dependence potential will generally be accepted
• those products which have dependence potential will generally not be accepted, except in the case of those that are prescribed for maintenance therapy or for detoxification purposes.

There will be no advertising of organisations that promote gambling. Extra scrutiny will be required before any services are advertised that are supported by funding from profits derived from gambling.

In addition there will be additional scrutiny of private agency advertising.

Appraisal and acceptance of advertisements

The Chair of the Of Substance Management Board will scrutinise and sign off on all advertisements.
